Mandarins

About the product

Mandarins are related varieties of oranges. They generally distinguished from oranges by their smaller size, loose, easily peelable skin (pericarp) and more sweeter juicy flesh (arils). They are also known as mandarin oranges in Europe. Just as in oranges, mandarins too belong within the Rutaceae (citrus Family) and known scientifically as Citrus reticulata.

Varieties

Arakapa

Arakapa mandarins are cultivated mainly in the geographical region of Arakapa village in the Limassol district and are produced from the variety of spp. Citrus Reticulata Blanco of the same name. This tree is known as the “Cypriot” or “local” and is famous for its fruit, which is very aromatic and tasty, but contains a large number of seeds. The fruit is of medium size with a yellow-orange color during maturation. Its skin is thin and smooth and is easily removed (Kapari – Isaia, 2006).

Nova

Nova, a sibling of the Lee, Osceola, and Robinson mandarins, is a hybrid of Clementine mandarin and Orlando tangelo. The medium-sized fruit is usually subglobose and has a slightly pebbled thin reddish-orange rind that is easily peeled. The flesh is dark orange, fine-textured, and juicy with a sweet, rich flavor.

Clementines

Originally based on Clementines, Cyprus has had a long experience in soft citrus growing. The increasing demand for easy peelers in world markets has encouraged the expansion and adaptation of citrus production with particular emphasis on hybrids.

Mandoras

The name Mandora is a synthesis of Mand(-arine) and ora(-nge) which has been given after considerable thought to this hybrid of a superb quality fruit developed by cross pollination of the two varieties. It is Mandarin Orange of a rather flat shape of deep orange colour. The pulp is tender and extremely juicy often exceeding 60% of the whole fruit’s weight. The juice is of outstanding colour, while the flavour is extremely sweet but well balanced with acidity and has a strong, rich aroma. It does not develop delayed bitterness.
